Alfred Kaufmann was born in Hainstadt in 1893. He served in World War I and was held as a prisoner of war by the British until 1919. In 1920 he became a member of the Oberrat (Supreme Council) of the Jewish community in Baden. In 1936, he opened a school for Jewish children in Freiburg, which was closed in 1938.
